Wyclef still into Haiti Presidency

Wyclef Jean said he is not abandoning his presidential bid and will try to get the courts to overturn a decision disqualifying him from the race. Jean, speaking to the Associated Press by telephone from his home in Croix des Bouquets, said his lawyers will file an appeal with the national electoral dispute office. Jean said that he has a document "which shows everything is correct" and that he and his aides "feel that whatever is going on here has everything to do with Haitian politics." and that "They are trying to keep us out of the race,"

Although he issued a statement late Friday saying that "I respectfully accept the committee's final decision," the 40-year-old singer said Sunday that he is appealing the Haitian board's decision on the basis that it rejected his candidacy before the national electoral dispute office, or BCEN, could issue a final ruling on the residency issue.
Haiti's elections board rejected Jean's candidacy Friday night (Aug. 20) -- citing that he didn't meet residency requirements, although the board did not cite a specific reason. Under Haitian law, a presidential candidate must have lived in the country for five consecutive years leading up to the election. Jean has argued that he was not required to comply with the law so strictly because after President Rene Preval appointed him as roving ambassador in 2007, he was allowed to travel and live outside the country.

The singer asked his fans to stay calm, and there were no significant election-related protests or violence over the weekend -- although rumors swirled about a large protest planned for Monday (Aug. 23).

from blasts to floods, what next for pakistan

while Thousands of people in Pakistan's Punjab province are fleeing their homes as the worst floods in the country's history threaten more areas in the south, others were running for each other's throats after the assassination of a prominent politician.
Floodwaters have submerged numerous villages and begun to pour into major urban centres like the city of Kot Addu in Punjab.
UN and Pakistani officials estimate that 3.2 million people are affected by the floods along the Indus River, and that at least 1,500 people have died in the past week.
Hurried evacuation
At least 47 people had been killed in Punjab, Pakistan's National Disaster Management Authority said.

Nearly 1,000 villages have been affected and some 15,000 houses destroyed in the province, according to the UN.
The rush of muddy water over river banks in Punjab threatened to destroy vast stretches of crops that make the province Pakistan's breadbasket.
The army used boats and helicopters to move stranded villagers in the area to higher ground.
Water levels were so high in large tracts of Kot Addu and the nearby area of Layyah in the south of the province, that only tree tops and uppermost floors of some buildings were visible.
A military spokesman told reporters that at least 30,000 people have been rescued from flood-hit zones in Kot Addu and nearby areas over the previous 72 hours.
He warned that more flooding was expected as weather forecasts predicted more rains in the next few days.
"People must co-operate with us, and they must leave those areas where floods are going to hit," he said.
This year's monsoon season has prompted the worst flooding in Pakistan in living memory.
The northwestern region of the country was the worst hit, until flood waters flowed downstream to inundate large areas in the south.
Food crisis
The UN is scrambling to provide food and other assistance to millions of people affected in the water-soaked nation, which was already struggling with violence and a poor economy.
AFFECTED AREAS

It has warned of serious food shortages following the loss of farm produce in the floods. The World Food Programme has estimated that 1.8 million people will need to be fed over the next month.
Rescue workers have struggled to deliver aid because of washed-out bridges and roads and downed communication lines.
Several foreign countries have stepped in to help, including the United States, which announced on Tuesday that it was sending six large military helicopters from Afghanistan to help with the relief effort.
But many flood victims have complained that aid is not reaching them fast enough or at all.

Nas And Damian Marley Light Up Brooklyn

"It's called 'Distant Relatives' because that's what we are! This isn't a concert, it's a family affair!" Nas announced onstage at Brooklyn's Williamsburg Waterfront on Saturday (July 31), referring to his collaborator and co-headliner Damian Marley. Throughout the show, the duo performed cuts off their "Distant Relatives" album together as well as doing alternating solo sets, all to a crowd of 7500 with the Manhattan skyline as a backdrop.

The show began with "As We Enter," with Nas and Damian backed by a full band that included a bongo player, backing vocalists, DJ Green Lantern and even a flag waver who waved the Jamaican banner for the duration of the 90 minute set.

After teaming up for "Tribal War" and "Nah Mean," Nas' solo set proved who the audience was really there to see. Deafening screams peppered a shortened "Nas Is Like," "Represent," the full version of "Hip Hop is Dead," and finally a medley of "Sweet Dreams / If I Ruled the World."

Damian returned to the stage for "Leaders," telling the audience, "We take for granted electricity, water, even concerts. Count your blessings," before launching into the album favorite of that name. During "Land of Promise," the entire crowd put their lighters up at Nas' request.

Next came Damian's solo set, which included "The Mission" and "More Justice." He then sang father Bob Marley's hits "War" and "No More Trouble." "If you're next to someone who's not jumping, grab them!," Damian yelled before incorporating the elder Marley's "Exodus" into "Move."

Nas returned for Distant Relatives cut "Patience," which featured Damian Marley's falsetto. "Strong Will Continue" was a standout that suited the audience's energy and had an anthem feel. During Nas' "Got Yourself A Gun," so familiar with fans that he barely had to rap, he let them take over. "Made You Look" had the audience in a frenzy that continued to Damian's solo "Welcome to Jamrock." Lighters made their return for "Road to Zion," after which Damian told the audience, "This song is about the birthplace of humanity," before moving into finale "Africa Must Wake Up" which had the entire audience singing along.

As the audience screamed for more, an instrumental version of Phil Collins' "In the Air Tonight" played before Nas returned for "One Mic," which induced a sudden surge by the audience, eager to get closer to the stage. He asked the audience, "If we wanted to we'd stay here all night. Would you stay?" He upped the ante continuing, "We've been all around the world - Jamaica showed us some love. You need to show Damian how we get down here," as the audience screamed. The duo finished their set with "Could You Be Loved," to fans' delight.

These we have heard since time immemorial, so then what really is new?
